RedOne Signs Label Deal

Tags: , , ,

There’s few producers/writers out there right now as hot as RedOne.  He’s worked with a ton of big names including Michael Jackson, Akon, Sean Kingston and most notably, Lady Gaga.  In fact he co-wrote a number of Gaga singles including “Poker Face,” “Just Dance” and “Bad Romance.”  Well the hit maker has recently created his own label called 2101 Records and signed a deal to partner with Universal Music.  All of RedOne’s artists will release albums via Universal, starting with his first signing… a 23 year old singer/songwriter named Mohambi.  His debut single “Bumpy Ride” came out today via Cherrytree/Interscope.

Coldplay Signs Huge Publishing Deal

Tags: , , , ,

Coldplay have reportedly signed one of the biggest publishing deals in the history of music.  The British rockers re-upped with Universal Music Publishing for an undisclosed amount and for an undisclosed length of time.  President of the company, Paul Connolly had this to say about the deal, which is certain to bring millions to all 4 of the act’s members…

“They’ve sold more than 50 million albums worldwide and their huge success is entirely deserved. We’re obviously very proud.”

We’re not surprised to hear they got a big deal.  We are however a bit surprised that ANYONE is getting one of the biggest in the history of music, as is being reported.  The whole industry is in the crapper right now.  Bravo to Chris Martin and co. for making the deal happen.

Seth MacFarlane Signs Label Deal

Tags: , , ,

Although he’s best known as the creator of The Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane also has quite a voice.  He does the voices for a number of characters on the show, and frequently signs the parody songs within the episodes.  Well now he’s looking to go legit as he has recently signed a label deal with Universal Republic.  Seth plans on releasing an album of 1940′s and 50′s show tunes, backed by a big band and orchestra.  He even stopped by Leno last night to talk about it and perform a bit.  Here’s what he had to say about the deal when speaking to Billboard…

“It’s rare in this day and age to have the opportunity to create an album that celebrates the classic, sophisticated sound of rich, lush swing orchestrations.  It will be an absolute joy to sing this music, and I look forward to working with the entire team at Universal Republic on what we intend to make an exceptional project.”

Weezer Sign Label Deal

Tags: , , , , ,

Remember when we told you last month that Weezer would be going indie for their next album?  Well now, it’s all official.  Rivers and his band have signed with Epitaph Records and will be releasing their 8th studio album, Hurley, on September 14th.  The guys were previously signed to Geffen Records.

So do you think the move from an major to an indie will work out for the best or is it a sign that they are simply on a decline?  Our guess is that the realized they would have more control on an indie and could probably get a better royalty rate as well.  They down side is, the marketing budget will not be the same.  However, when you’ve been around as long as Weezer has, are really expecting to gain tons of new fans, or are you simply honing in on the ones who are already well aware of you?  Should be interesting to see how this goes.

Christina Perri Signs Label Deal

Tags: , , ,

View All Photos | christina perri sings

Talk about an overnight success… Christina Perri was a waitress a few weeks ago.  Then her song “Jar of Hearts” was used on the show So You Think You Can Dance.  It then went on to sell more than 100,000 copies independently.  It also debuted at number 28 on Billboard’s Hot 100.  Obviously this sent the labels in a fury to sign her and she has now selected Atlantic Records as her home (however Roadrunner will continue to work the single at radio).

Interestingly enough, she is not the only one in her family with musical chops.  Her brother, Nick Perri is the former lead guitar player for the band Shinedown (also on Atlantic).

You can check out “Jar of Heart” here.

Good Charlotte Sign Label Deal

Tags: , , , , , ,

Although Good Charlotte has had triple platinum success in the past, the band has been relatively quite since their 2007 release, Good Morning Revival.  Well that’s about to change as the Madden brothers now have a new album and a new label.

The band will be releasing their 5th studio album, Cardiology on October 26th via Capitol.  The move comes after releasing their past albums through Epic.

Fans may remember that they initially recorded an album with producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects) and then decided to scrap the whole thing earlier this year.  They apparently started from scratch with Don Gilmore instead.

Later this month, they will be opening for Pink in Europe and plan to do a full tour of the US some time in 2011.

“Alicia Keys is without doubt one of the most important and accomplished songwriters of her generation, writing music that connects with fans across the world. We’re proud to have worked with her throughout her career to date, and to continue to represent such an incredible catalog of songs. And just imagine, every time I sing one of her songs in the shower, we get paid.”

Alicia also recently announced that her annual Black Ball event will be taking place on September 30th.  The benefit raises funds for her Keep A Child Alive Foundation.  Both Jay-Z and Sade will be performing during the affair which is being held at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
