It was exactly a week ago today that we shared the news of Rihanna tweeting to Ryan Seacrest that she would be sending him a new song. Well it turns out, the name of the song is “Only Girl (In The World)” and is set to be released to the masses tomorrow (9/8). It’s one of the tracks off her upcoming album, Loud which will be out in November, although an official date has yet to be announced.
During a webchat on her official website, the singer said the following about her new body of work…
“I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna. I’m gonna miss the Rated R era too, but NOTHING compares to the album I just made.”
Every artist on the planet claims “this is the best work I’ve ever done” when promoting their newest album. But in this case, do you believe her? Do you think she has more hits on this one coming than she did on Rated R? That’s not exactly an easy feat.
UPDATE: The song is out. It was featured earlier today by Ryan Seacrest. Have a listen here and let us know what you think.
Cee-Lo Green has created headlines, industry chatter and above all, notoriety with his new single “F*ck You” (as well it’s radio version, “Forget You”). Originally he released the song with a simple video that featured the lyrics and nothing more. Now Mr. Green has put out a real video with a 50′s theme and a pre-pubescent version of himself singing the words. You can see it here on his Facebook page, just note you’ll need to “Like” the page in order to view it. Ahhhh, and the marketing continues.
The album of covers that John Legend and The Roots are collectively putting out called Wake Up! will be out on September 21st. And to get you ready for what to expect, the fellas have released a studio video of sorts for the bluesy Bill Withers classic, “I Can’t Write Left Handed.” Have a look above as they all get to show off their skills as true musicians and do their best to have you forget the whole Miss Universe thing.
Fans of Rihanna have been wondering for some time when the singer would be going to radio with a new single. And now they have their answer. Just this morning, Rihanna sent the following message to Ryan Seacrest via her Twitter account…
“@RyanSeacrestSoon! In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special, and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I’m the only girl in the world!”
We’re pretty sure she could put out 3 minutes worth of fart sounds and it would get played at this point. But regardless, it should be interesting to see what she brings this time around.
Last October, Akon was scheduled to perform a concert in Belgium but apparently backed out just 8 days before the event. The promoter lost a quarter of a million dollars and is now suing the artist. 2 other artists on Akon’s label, Kardinall Offishall and Colby O’Donnis were also supposed to perform. Lofranco Belguim who is the promoter suing, said he paid Akon $125,000 before being told there was a “scheduling conflict.” He now not only wants to be paid back double, he also wants multi-millions in punitive damages.
While its no longer surprising to hear stories like these as they pop up all of the time, it IS however surprising to find someone who’s legal last name is the same as his country. Just sayin’.
Usher‘s newest single “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” featuring Pitbull is currently number 7 on the iTunes songs chart. And now he’s got a video for it. Check it out as it’s basically a showcase for his dance skills… as if you didn’t already know.
Last night (8/23), Mexico had reason to celebrate as the the Miss Universe pageant ended with a victory for one of their nation’s finest. But before the event came to an end, viewers were treated to a performance of sorts from John Legend & The Roots. Have a look above (and just note the video cleans up after a few seconds).
If only we could have heard the phone call that took place in order to get this performance to happen. Well we didn’t, however we came up with what we could only imagine the call sounded like…
Music Executive: Hello?
Pageant Rep: Hello, Mr. Music Exec?
Music Executive: Yes?
Pageant Rep: Hi, I’m a rep with the Miss Universe pageant.
Music Executive: Oh, hello. What can I do for you?
Pageant Rep: Well we have our event coming up and we thought it would be a great idea to take a credible hip hop act and a piano playing R&B singer and have them perform during the show. So naturally, The Roots and John Legend are at the top of our list.
Music Executive: I see, so you want them to come out and do a performance for the crowd to add some life to the show.
Pageant Rep: Umm, not exactly. We really just want them to perform some background music while the girls walk around in their dresses.
Music Executive: Ok. Well I guess we could have them do that. But should we bring along some dancers?
Pageant Rep: Oh no sir. The contestants are actually gonna have some choreographed dancing of their own at the start of the song. Then they will each come out to the front and center of the stage one by one while we hear them talking about what princesses they feel like in their evening gowns.
Music Executive: The contestants are professional dancers?
Pageant Rep: No, not at all. In fact, some of them are highly uncoordinated.
Music Executive: Hmmm. Well are they going to actually be talking over the song?
Pageant Rep: Yes. And some of them don’t speak English. So this should actually be fun for everyone.
Music Executive: I see. Well who would be introducing my boys on stage?
Pageant Rep: Oh don’t worry sir. We got a very credible artists to take care of that… Bret Michaels!
Music Executive: Brilliant! We’re in! Let me go share the good news with the guys. They’re gonna LOVE this!
T.I. may have pushed back his album release, but he’s still doing some promo for it. The formerly imprisoned rapper turned actor was the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel this past Friday (8/20). Along with Keri Hilson, he performed the song “Got Your Back.” Have a look above as we might not see too many more of these types of performances from T.I., at least until his movie promo schedule dies down.
In looking at today’s (8/20) iTunes chart, it seems as though Lil Wayne has the #1 single in “Right Above It.” The song features his top protege, Drake. However in the brand new video above, the roles are reversed as Drake is the lead artist and Lil Wayne simply provides a few bars of rhymes. But wait, how is Wayne even in the video if he’s locked up, you ask? Well, remember that video shooting spree he went on just days before heading to Rikers? Yeah, he obviously took a minute to shoot this one in front of a green screen so Drake and his team could cleverly edit in some footage. Check it out above.
The first single from the upcoming album by The Roots & John Legend is a cover of the classic hit “Wake Up Everybody.” They also recruited both Melanie Fiona and Common for the track. Have a look above at the just released video.
You gotta wonder when The Roots actually sleep. They are not only Jimmy Fallon‘s backing band, but they also frequently provide the sounds for Jimmy’s musical guests, which obviously takes time to learn and rehearse. They also live in Philly while work in New York. And somehow, they found time to do an album with John Legend on top of their own that they just released a few months ago. Damn. Maybe they wrote “The Fire” about themselves.
