Asylum

For months, it was being discussed whether or not Katy Perry would wind up breaking sales records with her new album, Teenage Dream.  Well it now looks like, that’s just not gonna happen.  Taking nothing away from her or Capitol who have managed to do a great job in building the artist, the album itself is actually being looked at as one that is under-performing, given all of the hype it had.  With 2 certified hits on the release in the chart topping “California Gurls” (which broke the record for radio spins in a week) and the album’s title track, early predictions had the album at roughly 300,000 in it’s first week.  The reality however, was that it sold 194,000.  That makes it the 9th biggest release of the year so far.  In it’s second week on sale, it looks like it will not only get bumped out of 1st place but will likely land at number 3 as the latest installment of the Now That’s What I Call Music series appears to have the advantage.  As for whether or not it will continue to decline or will be able to sell solid numbers each week ala Justin Bieber‘s My World 2.0, that remains to be seen.  As for the new chart topper, that will be hard rock act Disturbed who will see their 4th consecutive number 1 debut.

Have a look below at how Hits is saying the sales week will end come Tuesday.

* Disturbed (Reprise) 150-160k

Teenage Dream

As expected, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream may have just become reality.  If she ever imagined having a number 1 album, those thoughts came to fruition last week as she took over the sales chart with more than 194,000 copies sold.  It’s certainly an improvement from the debut of her first album which saw 47,000 sales in it’s first week.  Also having a big first week is Fantasia who’s Back To Me album surpassed expectations following lots of press coverage of her seemingly crumbling personal life.  Her 122,000 sales were good enough for 2nd place.  Although Eminem‘s run at the top is finally over, he has the only recurrent album in the top 5.  Have a look below at how it all played out.

#1 – Katy PerryTeenage Dream (Capitol) – 194,233

Teenage Dream

As expected, Katy Perry will have the number 1 album of the week when the sales are tallied on Tuesday.  And from the way it looks now, Eminem is not only losing the top spot, but won’t finish in 2nd either.  Fantasia seems to have caused enough attention around her recent suicide attempt, to bring some needed positivity to her life.  Her album is doing better than expected and looks to finish behind Katy.  Usher and Little Big Town will fight it out for 4th place as both look to have around 40,000 sold.  Have a look below at how Hits thinks the results will pan out.

*Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 200k +/-

Recovery

The kid’s still got it.  Eminem still has the number 1 album of the week, although this is going to be his last stand as Katy Perry is likely to post some monster numbers this week with the release of Teenage Dreams.  Behind Em though, you’ll see the next 4 spots all coming from brand new albums.  Out of the recurrents in the top 10, only Lady Antebellum is seeing an increase in sales as their Need You Now album jumps up 39% and lands at number 7.  Have a look below at how it all played out.

Well what do we have here?  Seems as though the sales week which ends on Tuesday, will feature 4 brand new albums in the top 5.  But of course, Eminem will still be at number one.  That will most certainly change next week when Katy Perry‘s Teenage Dream hits the shelves.  But for now anyway, it looks like Em is still the king of the sales.  He’s also the only one who will hit the 6 figure mark this week.  Take a look below and how Hits is predicting the final numbers will look.

The Week In Sales

Although it was a tight race once again, Eminem finished as the victor in the album sales war this week.  Even though his sales were down 3%, he managed to edge out Arcade Fire who finished with their strongest week ever.  Bun B, Lady Gaga and Buckcherry were also able to finish in the top 10 with their debuts.  Avenged Sevenfold (the only act to take Eminem off the top spot since the release of the rapper’s Recovery album) saw a 71% drop but ended up in 3rd.  Have a look below at the entire list of the top 10 finishers.

#1 – EminemRecovery (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) – 151,729

Recovery

If Eminem is indeed able to pull off the feat of taking back the number one spot, he will be able to claim the top rank as his for 6 out of 7 weeks.  Not only that, but he’s also set to be the only other artist to have pulled 100,000 plus sales every week for 7 weeks this year (Lady Antebellum also conquered that feat).  However, Arcade Fire is looking to hold it’s own and could give Em a tough run for his money.  Lady Gaga will have the honors of the 2nd highest debut (assuming she beats out Bun B) as she released a remix album on Tuesday.  Have a look below at how Hits believes it will all end up come Tuesday.

Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 150-155k
* Arcade Fire (Merge) 130-140k
Avenged Sevenfold (Warner Bros.) 45-50k
Rick Ross (Def Jam/IDJ) 40-45k
Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 35-40k
* Lady Gaga, The Remix (Interscope) 35-40k
* Bun B (Rap-a-Lot) 35-40k
Drake (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 30-35k
Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 30-35k
* Buckcherry (Eleven Seven Music) 25-30k
* Black Crowes (Silver Arrow) 25-30k
Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 24-27k
Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 21-24k
Now 34 (Capitol/EMI) 20-22k
Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 20-22k

The Week In Sales

Nightmare

Last week, Hits reported that Eminem lost the album sales title to Rick Ross in a very close battle.  Everyone else reported that Eminem was actually the victor.  This week, it seems as though Em was in another very close race as his Recovery album sold under 1,000 copies less than this week’s top finisher, Avenged Sevenfold.  The hardcore band put out their 5th studio album, Nightmare which is their first since the untimely passing of their drummer, James “The Rev” Sullivan.  If these stats are correct, it looks like we can officially call Eminem’s time at the top, a 5 week run.  Avenged Sevenfold were the only debut to crack the top 10, while the only one to see a jump in sales was Lady Antebellum who’s Need You Now release is up 6%.

Here’s a look at how the week ended…

#1 – Avenged SevenfoldNightmare (Warner Bros) – 157,452

#2 – EminemRecovery (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) – 156,677

#3 – Rick RossTeflon Don (Def Jam) – 58,744
